The children’s book publishing industry in India today appears to be buzzing, considering the array of children’s books that have been produced in the post-liberalisation period, especially in the English language. Are these books different from the ones produced in earlier decades, and if so, in what ways? What has been the trajectory of this journey, what are its key accomplishments and what are the challenges? How closely do they reflect the diverse realities of Indian children and their experiences? Have we developed distinctive voices, or are we still struggling to find them? These, and other such questions, are addressed in the essays written by pioneers and practitioners of children’s literature in India. They include publishers, authors, illustrators, editors, translators, librarians and educators. Deliberately eschewing jargon and technical language, the essays speak directly to anybody interested in the world of children’s literature. Peppered with examples and citations of published works, Children’s Books: An Indian Story springboards a thought-provoking platform for debate and discussion in a critical, creative space.
Children's Books: An Indian Story is a wonderful collection of essays and writings on a subject that has started gaining the recognition it deserves at long last. For the longest time, the only books available to children were written by western authors and they were the gold standard in the arena. The recent surge in quality children's literature written by Indian authors for Indian children has opened up mirrors, windows and doors for many children. In a country as diverse as ours, it is difficult to capture identities but now, thanks to the efforts of publishers such as Eklavya, EkTara, Parag, Ek Tara and others, there are books available for children in so many different languages about topics ranging from simple everyday matters to adventure and fantasy to gender and social issues. I am grateful to the editors for compiling this insightful collection of essays on the various aspects of children's literature. As someone passionate about getting children to love books (my day job), there is much I learned from this magnificent collection.
I have been admiring the book, I must say, never before such articulations are done in an Indian context. Thank you so much for doing this important work . The book in itself is a textbook for aspiring artists, writers, creative practitioners , educators. I absolutely can't stop admiring the hard work that went into it.
It's a comprehensive work in the field of children literature which is useful for writers, illustrators, publishers, educators and teachers.
brilliant book!
This is first of its kind book on children's literature in India at this juncture. Congratulations to all involved in developing the book. Diversity of voices included in the book from authors, illustrators, publishers, educators, teachers make it very special.
